A ceiling stain is a clue, not a diagnosis
A damp patch can be caused by a roofing leak, plumbing or condensation. Note when it appears: during rain, after snowmelt or even in dry weather. Water can travel along framing before it becomes visible, so the stain alone does not locate the source.
Document what you can see safely
Take pictures of indoor stains and visible exterior damage from the ground. Record the weather and when the problem began. Keep away from wet electrical fittings and avoid entering an attic with unsafe access. Do not climb onto the roof to look for a leak.
Ask for an inspection before choosing a repair
Give a roofing professional your notes and ask them to explain the suspected source and the proposed repair. Flashing, roof penetrations and damaged roofing materials may need different approaches. A patch should address the source rather than simply cover the area nearest the stain.
When the situation needs immediate attention
An active leak, a sagging ceiling or water near electrical equipment needs prompt professional help. Keep people away from the affected area. If there is immediate danger, contact the appropriate emergency service. A small stain that has dried still deserves investigation if it returns.
