Start with a look from the ground

Autumn is a useful time to check your roof before snow makes problems harder to see. From a safe position on the ground, look for missing shingles, uneven roof edges and debris collecting in the eavestroughs. Binoculars can help. A ground-level check cannot confirm that a roof is watertight, but it can identify reasons to book a professional inspection.

Check eavestroughs and downspouts

Fallen leaves can restrict drainage. Look for overflowing gutters during rain and downspouts that do not discharge freely. Have a qualified professional clear debris and check gutter attachments where access requires a ladder. Avoid walking on the roof or leaning a ladder against an unstable gutter.

Pay attention to flashing and indoor stains

Chimneys, roof-to-wall junctions and vents are places where roof details deserve attention. From the ground, note loose or visibly displaced metal. Inside the home, record any new ceiling stains, peeling paint or damp smells. The visible stain may be some distance from the actual entry point, so avoid assuming that the repair belongs directly above it.

Plan ahead for ice dams

An ice dam forms when melted snow refreezes at a colder roof edge and blocks drainage. Heat escaping from the home can contribute to uneven roof temperatures. Ask a qualified professional about attic air leakage, insulation and ventilation together rather than treating extra ventilation as a universal fix. Never chip roof ice with a sharp tool or climb onto an icy roof.

Keep a simple roof record

Save ground-level photographs, dates of leaks and previous repair information. Give this record to your roofer and ask for a written description of the findings, recommended work and scope. A pre-winter check does not guarantee a leak-free winter, but it gives you a clearer picture of what needs attention.
